Welcome to my blog! Visit my “Hello!” page to learn more about Child Life Specialists.
Passion, Play and Possibilities: The “Three Peas” of Child Life. How did I come up with this name? When I was thinking of what it means to be a Child Life Specialist, three words kept popping into my head. Becoming a Child Life Specialist is not easy and it takes a lot of dedication and work. You have to be passionate about helping children if you want to reach your dreams of becoming a Child Life Specialist. Once you start working at a Child Life Specialist, you will learn that the essence of their work is therapeutic play. They aren’t the “play lady or “babysitter.” They are someone who understands children’s development and uses that knowledge to lead children in therapeutic play. Because of their understanding of children, the possibilities for a Child Life Specialist are endless. There are so many things you can do with you knowledge and so many ways you can help children grow and develop.
Why start a blog?
I started this blog because I hope to inspire and help others who are also on their journey to becoming a Child Life Specialist. I also hope to eventually help other Child Life Specialists with the amazing work that they do. I am like every other student working to become a Child Life Specialist: I volunteer in hospitals, I have done a practicum, I’m looking for an internship, I’m going to have to study for the certification exam and I hope to get a job after certification. But I’m also unique! I have experience working with survivors of trauma and I work hard to learn more about how to help survivors. I created and directed my own summer camp for 3 years, and I am now advising the new director. I am not majoring in Child Life, so I work hard to find other educational opportunities that will prepare me for the field of Child Life. I hope that my unique background might bring something different to the world of Child Life Blogs.
Who are you?
My name is Elise and I am from Southern Vermont. I am slightly obsessed with anything zebra print, I love wearing flannels, I try to avoid dairy but I have a weakness for cheese, I was homeschooled and am now attending a small liberal arts college in Kansas, I have a passion for helping those in need, Leslie Knope from Parks and Recreation is my spirit animal, I have seen every episode of Law and Order SVU at least twice (although the truth is I’ve probably seen most of them 4+ times), I cannot live without my planner and I want to make a difference in the world. I believe that Child Life Specialists can make a difference in a child’s life, and to me that is a step in changing the world.
“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”
